‘Timeless Love Songs from Classic Films’ // Candlelight Concerts
‘Timeless Love Songs from Classic Films’ was romantic.
From the moment you step into The Grand and walk up the elegant candle lit staircase, it’s immediately clear you’re in for a night of enchantment. Few combinations are more romantic than a string quartet, soft candlelight, and a collection of timeless love songs. Place those elements in an intimate, heritage-listed venue on the night before Valentine’s Day, and you have the ultimate romantic evening.
The concert promised a journey through some of the most movie iconic love songs in film, and from the first note of ‘Unchained Melody’ from Ghost, it was clear the show would be something special. The violins’ gentle swells, followed by the cello’s rich, resonant tones, captured the song’s longing and passion with intensity and was the perfect opening number.
The Paradiso Strings quartet—Grace Choi and Iris Doo on violin, Nara Dennis on viola, and Deborah Davis on cello (who also served as the evening’s MC)—brought these beloved cinematic ballads to life with exceptional artistry. Paradiso Strings, an Australian quartet known for their versatile repertoire that spans classical, contemporary, jazz, and film soundtracks, dazzled with their expressive playing. Their innovative approach to the string quartet genre was on full display and captivated the audience at every turn.
The program soared through unforgettable Disney hits, including The Lion King’s ‘Can You Feel the Love Tonight’ and Aladdin’s ‘A Whole New World’, before venturing into one of Elton John’s most romantic tunes, ‘Your Song’. The quartet then honoured classics such as ‘Moon River’, ‘Cinema Paradiso’, ‘The Way We Were’, and ‘Can’t Help Falling in Love’, each piece resonating with warmth and nostalgia. The beauty of the arrangements made the music feel timeless, while the flickering candles illuminated The Grand’s Classical Revival architecture with a soft, golden glow.
The finale took us through more modern love songs, including ‘I Like Me Better’ from All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, ‘A Thousand Years’ from Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 1, ‘Shallow’ from A Star is Born, and the ultimate romantic anthem, ‘My Heart Will Go On’ from Titanic. Each piece was delivered with such delicate expression that the audience could feel the very essence of the love stories they represent.
