David Wynen Come From Away

In The Haus: David Wynen

David Wynen’s journey into theatre began with a bold leap of faith. Encouraged by his mother, he pursued his passion for performing despite starting later than most. His dedication led him from local dance schools to international stages, expanding his talents from dancing to singing, acting, directing, and choreographing. Inspired by the golden era of vaudeville and the Tivoli circuit, David built a career fueled by resilience, creativity, and a love for storytelling.

Now, he’s directing and choreographing ‘Come From Away’ at the Empire Theatre in Toowoomba, bringing to life the incredible true story of a small town that welcomed 7,000 stranded passengers following 9/11. This powerful musical has moved audiences worldwide with its uplifting message of kindness and humanity. In this In The Haus feature, Theatre Haus chats with David about his career milestones, the creative process behind this inspiring production, and his dreams of one day directing on Broadway.

We’d love to know more about the beginning of your career – where and how did you get your start?

I always knew I was destined to perform and create theatre. Despite my father’s concerns, I bravely followed my passion and attended the local dance school, supported wholeheartedly by my mother. Although I started late, once I became independent and chose my own classes and colleges, I dedicated myself fully, fueled by unwavering determination. From there, my journey blossomed into singing and acting. In time, I discovered my desire to direct, choreograph, and create, embracing every opportunity to express my artistry.

What or who were some of your early influences or inspirations that shaped your career?

My early influences were remarkable teachers from the generations before, who came from the vibrant worlds of vaudeville and the Tivoli circuit. I feel incredibly fortunate to have learned so much from this extraordinary generation that has now passed.

What are some of the most defining moments or milestones in your career so far?

At 22, I defied the odds by winning a dance scholarship during a time many consider too old to start. I earned a major academic award that took me to the USA, where I learned and rehabilitated with the incredible dance legend Luigi. After a crippling accident, I pursued my dreams and joined the cast of “Billy Elliot.” I even had the honour of directing on the international stage.

What is a quirky fact about you, or something people wouldn’t expect about your story?

I passionately collect vintage vinyl records, immersing myself in the timeless artistry of classic icons like Eydie Gorme, Sinatra, Bassey, and Nancy Wilson. I find joy in transforming spaces through home renovation and decoration, breathing new life into every corner.

What are you currently working on and how has that creative process been?

I am currently working with the Empire Theatre in Toowoomba, directing and choreographing ‘Come From Away’ – a truly inspirational piece that has touched my soul.

What’s in your rehearsal bag that you can’t go without?

I need my camera/ phone to review rehearsals for improvement, my tap shoes because they might come in handy at any moment, and my Typo journal book to jot down all my creative ideas.

Do you have a reading, teaching/advice, institution or resource that changed your life/perspective, which you’d recommend to others?

You are the architect of your own identity. Don’t let anyone convince you that you’ve started too late or that you can’t overcome challenges. Seek out someone whose journey inspires you and forge your own path by following their example.

What advice would you give to a young person today aspiring to walk in your shoes?

No job or gig is too small or silly -embrace every opportunity. You never know where it may lead you. Let go of your ego and take that leap.

What are your future aspirations or projects that you’re excited about?

My ultimate dream is to become a resident director and choreographer on Broadway. This position would allow me to blend my passion for storytelling with my love for dance, creating unforgettable experiences for audiences. With my skills and dedication, I am eager to contribute to the vibrant energy of Broadway and help bring compelling narratives to life on stage.

Theatre Haus is the ‘home of theatre’, where, what or who do you call home?

I live in New York, but truly, home is wherever my Golden Retriever, Lana, brings joy and love.
