Daniel Evans Appointed Artistic Director of Queensland Theatre
Queensland Theatre has announced celebrated director, playwright, and theatre-maker Daniel Evans as its new Artistic Director.
Known for his innovative work, Evans brings 20 years of creative excellence to the role. This appointment marks a full-circle moment for Evans, whose journey with Queensland Theatre began at just 16 when he won the company’s Young Playwrights Award in 2000 for his debut, ‘Opening A Fuzzwollop’s Frame of Mind;. Queensland Theatre Chair Dean Gibson called the appointment “a celebration of a 20-year partnership that has shaped the future of Australian theatre.”
Evans is no stranger to accolades. His 2014 play ‘Oedipus Doesn’t Live Here Anymore’ won the Queensland Premier’s Drama Award, and his recent directorial work, including ‘Drizzle Boy’ and ‘The Almighty Sometimes’, earned consecutive Matilda Awards for Best Production and Best Director in 2023 and 2024.
As Associate Artistic Director, Evans spearheaded Queensland Theatre’s Door 3 program, a groundbreaking initiative supporting independent theatre-makers. The program attracted 80 entries in its inaugural year and produced three public seasons in 2024.
Queensland Theatre CEO Criena Gehrke praised Evans as “one of Australia’s best directors” and a champion of local stories. “Dan’s leadership will shape a vibrant future for theatre in our state,” she said.
Evans, set to direct ‘Pride & Prejudice’ and ‘A Few Good Men’ in 2025, called his appointment “a profound honour,” adding, “Theatre has the power to transform lives—it’s my privilege to continue sharing that magic.”
His vision for Queensland Theatre includes fostering a space where artists and audiences thrive, promising bold new works and unforgettable experiences.
