BMW Opera for All Returns to Melbourne in 2025
‘BMW Opera for All’, a free outdoor opera concert, will return to Melbourne’s Federation Square on Saturday, 1 February 2025.
Now in its third year, the event has become a cultural highlight for Melbourne, offering world-class opera performances in an inclusive and accessible setting.
For the first time, the 2025 edition will feature a prelude performance by the Australian Girls Choir. This 30-minute showcase underscores BMW’s commitment to supporting grassroots arts and culture, fostering young talent, and connecting emerging artists with celebrated operatic professionals.
The evening’s main performance will feature four of Opera Australia’s finest talents. Soprano Olivia Cranwell, known for her standout roles in ‘The Ring Cycle’ and ‘La bohème’, will be joined by mezzo-soprano Dimity Shepherd, a three-time Green Room Award winner, whose recent performances include ‘Eucalyptus’ and ‘Carmen’. Tenor Shanul Sharma, acclaimed for roles in ‘The Barber of Seville’ and ‘The Magic Flute’, and baritone Christopher Hillier, fresh from his role as Zurga in ‘The Pearl Fishers’, will round out the lineup.
A 20-piece orchestra from Orchestra Victoria, led by renowned conductor Brian Castles-Onion, will accompany the singers. This celebrated cast and orchestra promise an unforgettable evening, featuring a selection of timeless opera classics and beloved arias.
BMW Group Australia CEO Wolfgang Buechel praised the event’s cultural impact.
“This performance celebrates local talent and brings joy to Melburnians and visitors alike. It’s an inclusive celebration for the whole community.”
Opera Australia CEO Fiona Allan added, “We’re thrilled to share the beauty of opera with thousands of people in Melbourne through this global initiative.”
With room for up to 8,000 attendees in Fed Square’s vibrant outdoor space, ‘BMW Opera for All’ is set to be one of Australia’s largest free cultural events in 2025. No tickets or registration are required, ensuring that the magic of opera is open to all.
