Queensland Invests Over $1 Million to Tackle Regional Workforce Shortages

The Queensland Government has committed more than $1 million in funding to support eight regional projects through its ‘Grow Your Own’ (GYO) workforce program. The initiative, powered by Jobs Queensland, is designed to address critical workforce challenges and ensure local communities have the skills and employment opportunities they need to thrive.

The funding will target industries facing significant workforce shortages, including aged care, health, manufacturing, tourism, and childcare. The program will tackle issues such as workforce attraction, development, retention, career transitions, and industry growth, addressing the unique needs of each region.

The projects funded in this round include a workforce plan for North Queensland’s aged care industry to meet the projected demand for 110,000 additional workers nationwide by 2026, and a health workforce development plan for Toowoomba that supports 17,500 jobs and contributes over $1.3 billion to the local economy. Central Queensland will see a manufacturing workforce plan to support clean energy projects, while the Central Highlands region will benefit from a workforce sustainability project for childcare facilities.

Additionally, the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail tourism industry will receive a workforce plan to address shortages, and the Maranoa region will focus on workforce attraction and development. Other funded projects include support for arts and recreation services in Central Western Queensland and the ‘Unleash Your Potential’ project to encourage careers in the active industry.

Jobs Queensland Board Chair, Jim Varghese AM, said the initiative is a collaborative effort to address regional workforce needs.

“Jobs Queensland’s ‘Grow Your Own’ regional workforce program is founded on working with stakeholders on the ground to deliver workforce solutions they need,” Varghese said.

With this funding, the Queensland Government continues to support local industries and help communities prepare for a strong, sustainable future.
