The film follows Dr Louise (Susan Sarandon) a career-driven heart surgeon, and cat lady; Marilyn (Bette Midler) a vivacious entertainer and the bride to be; Alice (Megan Mullally) a quirky, back-up singer and fashionista; and Kitty (Sheryl Lee Ralph) a successful Christian, cannabis farmer, as they reunite for a weekend getaway in the fun and fresh Key West, Florida. There’s tension in the air as we learn that Lou is not aware of the Marilyn’s second wedding and is led on the adventure with the promise of a 6 toed cat, which apparently is what she has always wanted. 

At its core, ‘The Fabulous Four’ is a celebration of the unbreakable bonds that withstand the test of time. Moorhouse masterfully weaves themes of friendship, aging, and empowerment, reminding us that it’s never too late to embrace life’s joys and challenges. The film’s narrative strikes a perfect balance between humour and heartfelt moments, making it both entertaining and emotionally resonant.

Susan Sarandon delivers a standout performance as Louise, capturing her character’s vulnerability with grace and depth. It seems she is still heartbroken from the one love of her life and is soon known as the lonely cat lady! Bette Midler brings her signature cheekiness, charm and wit to Marilyn, providing comic relief and poignant insight into the complexities of forgiveness. Megan Mullally shines as Alice and is a far cry from the character of Karen (Will and Grace) delivering a quirky and endearing performance that adds layers to the group dynamic. Meanwhile, Sheryl Lee Ralph’s portrayal of Kitty is both commanding and nuanced, offering a powerful depiction of strength and motherhood.

The chemistry among the four leads is undeniable, creating an authentic and relatable portrayal of aging and friendship. The film considers the idea of mature people on social media and shows audiences exactly what can go wrong. We are taken along for the ride as these women enjoy life to the very fullest!

Her ability to blend humour and drama is evident throughout the film, allowing the story to flow naturally and effortlessly. Still shots of photos of the four friends in their prime show us how far back these friendships date. Touches of colour have been added to black and white images at the opening of the film as a way of establishing the timeline of these women’s lives. 

The cinematography beautifully captures the scenic backdrop of the tourist spot in Florida, adding a visual richness that complements the film’s lively atmosphere. Each scene is thoughtfully crafted, with establishing shots of the island lifestyle enhancing the storytelling with its visual appeal. And of course, there’s music and several singalongs for us to sway along with. It wouldn’t be a Bette Midler movie without a few big show tunes!
