‘In The Heights’ to perform at Sydney Opera House

Sydney’s iconic Opera House is set to host the electrifying musical ‘In the Heights’ from 20 July to 25 August 2024.

Created by Lin-Manuel Miranda (‘Hamilton’, ‘Moana’), ‘In the Heights’ is a salsa-fuelled musical about a vibrant community in Washington Heights. Recognised as a transformative piece of musical theatre, the production secured 13 nominations and won four Tony Awards in 2008, including Best Musical and Best Original Score.

The narrative weaves the life of three generations residing in a spirited Latin American community. It integrates a rich tapestry of musical styles, including salsa, soul, hip-hop, street dance, rap, and merengue, capturing the dynamic pulse of the borough.

This production’s narrative unfolds over a sweltering three-day period, introducing audiences to Usnavi, portrayed by Ryan Gonzalez (‘Moulin Rouge!’, ‘Jersey Boys’). Usnavi is the heart of the story, managing his bodega while dreaming of a return to the Dominican Republic. Complications ensue with his unspoken affection for Vanessa (Olivia Vásquez, ‘Moulin Rouge!’, ‘West Side Story’), who aspires to move downtown. The community’s daily life is humorously and touchingly disrupted when a winning lottery ticket surfaces in the neighbourhood, adding to the existing mix of dreams and challenges the characters face.

Ebony Bott, Sydney Opera House’s Head of Contemporary Performance, emphasised that ‘In the Heights’ is more than just a musical — it’s a celebration of community and cultural vibrancy.

“‘In the Heights” is an uplifting musical that celebrates collective joy in a truly genuine and spirited way,” said Bott.

“Community, culture, connection and colour explode on-stage in a vibrant setting, as we are enveloped into the lives of characters holding fast to their history and creating new traditions.”

Presented at the Sydney Opera House in July, this production will be a collaborative effort featuring prominent local talents. Directed by Luke Joslin and choreographed by Amy Campbell, the production team includes Associate Director Clary Riven, Associate Choreographer Tash Marconi, and Music Director Victoria Falconer, with Rhys Velasquez handling casting and Will Centurion serving as the Cultural Consultant.

‘In the Heights’ promises a compelling mix of love, belonging, and the enduring spirit of a community. It’s an intimate celebration of friendship and family that is expected to be a highlight of Sydney’s winter cultural calendar.

Don’t miss the chance to experience this breathtaking musical in one of the world’s most famous venues.
