Gold Unity Gala Shines Bright for Theatre Scene

The Gold Coast sparkled with the glamour and camaraderie of the first-ever Gold Unity Gala, a magnificent event that illuminated unity and collaboration within the local theatre community. Hosted at SOPO, the gala took place on November 20, 2023, starting at 6:30 pm.

Distinguished guests, including Mayor Tom Tait and Councillor Bob La Castra, graced the occasion, joined by theatre figureheads like Duncan Sims of Spotlight Theatre, Stuart Morgan of Gold Coast Little Theatre, and Jocelyn Moore-Carter of Javeenbah. The event also welcomed Joel Beskin, founder of the Gold Coast Theatre Alliance.

The concept for the Gold Unity Gala originated from the collaborative vision of Duncan Sims and Stuart Morgan two years ago, aiming to showcase solidarity within the theatre communities. Stuart Morgan shared, “Duncan and I started talking about doing something together to show our theatre communities that we are all in this together. All of us need to succeed so community theatre can succeed.”

The gala, attended in black-tie formal attire, featured a three-course dinner, presentations highlighting the achievements of the three theatres in 2023, and recognition for volunteers who tirelessly contributed to at least two of the three theatres in the past year. Lucky door prizes and local theatre trivia added an exciting element to the night.

Organizers expressed gratitude to the Gold Coast City Council for its unwavering support of local community theatre and for endorsing this event. Live music by local artists from the theatre community set the mood, and attendees danced the night away to a lively setlist performed by Gold Coast Little Theatre’s resident band.

The Gold Unity Gala aimed to celebrate the synergy and success of Gold Coast community theatre, showcasing the power of collaboration.
