Rocky Horror Show Celebrates 50th Anniversary with Jason Donovan at the Helm

In a spectacular return, the iconic rock ‘n’ roll musical, The Rocky Horror Show, is set to dazzle audiences once again in 2024. After its triumphant 2023 season, the legendary musical, celebrating its 50th Anniversary world tour, promises to be bigger and better than ever.

Premiering at the Civic Theatre Newcastle on 12th January, the Australian production will spotlight the multifaceted Jason Donovan in the role of Frank N Furter. Myf Warhurst will join him as the Narrator, but only for the Newcastle season. The show is set to return to Melbourne’s Atheneum Theatre from 9th February and Sydney’s Theatre Royal from 31st March. The cast boasts a mix of returning talents and new faces. Stellar Perry, Deirdre Khoo, Henry Rollo, Darcey Eagle, and Ellis Dolan will reprise their roles. Joining the ensemble for the 2024 tour are Blake Bowden and Daniel Erbacher, playing Brad and Rocky respectively.

Richard O’Brien, the genius behind the creation of The Rocky Horror Show, expressed his elation about the musical’s longevity. “From its humble beginnings in 1973 at London’s Royal Court Theatre to now, celebrating its 50th anniversary in Australia, it’s beyond my wildest expectations,” he said.

Jason Donovan, whose illustrious 30-year international career speaks for itself, commented on his experience: “Playing Frank in the 50th Anniversary production of the Rocky Horror Show in Australia was one of the most enjoyable times in my career. I’m thrilled for the encore seasons in Melbourne and Sydney and can’t wait to perform in Newcastle.”

Its 1975 film adaptation, ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’, remains the longest-running theatrical release in cinema history. Over the past five decades, the musical has been a platform for stars like Russell Crowe, Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, and many more.

The narrative revolves around college sweethearts Brad and Janet, who encounter the eccentric Dr. Frank’n’Furter from the galaxy of Transylvania. The show is a rollercoaster of emotions, filled with timeless songs, unforgettable characters, and flamboyant outfits.
