Back to the Future Day, Movie or Musical
It’s been 37 years since the release of the iconic film, Back to the Future, and fans still can’t get enough of the time-travelling adventures of Marty McFly and Doc Brown. Now, in 2023, the story has made its way to Broadway in the form of a musical that has been years in the making.
The journey of Back to the Future: The Musical began back in 2015, when Robert Zemeckis, the film’s co-creator, announced that a stage adaptation was in the works. Fast forward to 2020, and the show finally premiered in Manchester, where it received positive reviews from both fans and critics alike.
Directed by John Rando, with music and lyrics by Alan Silvestri and Glen Ballard, the musical follows the same basic plot as the film. Marty McFly travels back in time to the 1950s and accidentally interferes with his parents’ first meeting, putting his own existence in jeopardy. With the help of his eccentric friend Doc Brown, Marty must find a way to set things right and get back to the future.
One of the biggest challenges of adapting Back to the Future for the stage was bringing the film’s iconic time-travelling DeLorean to life. The solution? An impressive array of projections and special effects give the audience the feeling of soaring through time and space.
But it’s not just the DeLorean that impresses. The show’s production design, by Tim Hatley, has been praised for its ability to capture the essence of the 1980s while also adding a fresh and modern twist.
The original London cast, which included Olly Dobson as Marty McFly, Roger Bart as Doc Brown, and Hugh Coles as George McFly, received high praise for their performances. And now, as the show makes its way to Broadway, fans can expect to see some familiar faces returning to their roles.
In fact, Bart and Coles are both set to reprise their roles in the Broadway production, alongside newcomer Casey Likes, who will take on the role of Marty McFly. And with the rest of the cast now announced, excitement for the show’s Broadway debut is at an all-time high.
Back to the Future: The Musical has already proven to be a hit with audiences, and with its arrival on Broadway, it’s sure to capture the hearts of even more fans. So, whether you’re a die-hard fan of the original film or a newcomer to the story, make sure you grab your tickets and get ready to be transported back in time to Hill Valley, where anything is possible. Happy Back to the Future Day!
