ImproMafia bring their new show to Anywhere Festival
The Anywhere Festival will host an interactive murder mystery from the 6th to the 14th of May with Murder at the Bowlo.
Presented by ImproMafia, Brisbane’s veteran impro specialists, the show will feature the best of the best local improvisers. They will play colourful characters in the corruption-ridden Queensland of the 1980s, as they weave and weft a tale of skulduggery at the Salisbury Community Sports Club.
“It’s such a thrill to do an interactive show like this in an actual bowls club,” said director Luke Rimmelzwaan. “And the audience of the show gets to piece together clues in an attempt to work out who the murderer is. They can do that by watching scenes, interacting with the cast, or eavesdropping on their conversations. The first person or team to identify the murderer wins a meat tray (or a vegan or vegetarian alternative).”
The show is set in 1987, which marked the start of the Fitzgerald Enquiry when preparations for Expo ‘88 were really starting to kick into gear. This was a time when Brisbane was changing, and corruption and vice seeped through all levels of Brisbane society.
“It is set in the 1987 of an alternative reality. The spirit of the time and place is the same, but some of the details are different. It gives us a chance to really explore the seediness of the characters, and to make them so awful at times that they can be delightful as we have that distance now”, Luke said.
Formed in 2004, ImproMafia is Brisbane’s most enduring impro company, branching out from small pub shows to theatres, festivals, and a highly-regarded training program which offers ways to help boost confidence and creativity both on and off stage.
“We have had a relationship with the Anywhere Festival almost since it began, and it has been a real delight performing in the nooks and crannies of Brisbane,” Luke said.
“This show will scratch a different itch to some of our others, as I think it will really appeal to the mystery and puzzle lovers among us.”
