Big Fork opens new dedicated comedy theatre
Brisbane is the place to be in 2022 for all the laughs!
Well, that’s what the Big Fork Theatre Directors believe as they realise their long-term dream of opening a permanent home for improv and comedy in Queensland.
Located in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley, the new 100-seat black box theatre will open to the public from Thursday, 10 February 2022. Featuring a bar and a classroom, this new space exists thanks to the community Big Fork has built over the years.
The team have built walls, staging and accessibility improvements, thanks to the donations of over $50,000 from generous supporters. The raised funding has covered many of the costs, and, as the Director of Big Fork Theatre Rosa Sottile put it, has made many dreams come true.
“We are so excited – we almost can’t believe it’s really happening,” said Sottile.
“The infectious joy of improv shows will now be available to audiences and performers alike every week! The real ride is only just beginning with the theatre opening on February 10, 2022. Brisbanites can find great improvised comedy, sketch comedy and stand up comedy every week at our purpose-built venue.”
Creating comedy and improv since 2016, Big Fork Theatre runs improv training and have presented many sold-out performances across Southeast Queensland. In 2020, the search was on to find their permanent home in the Brisbane community.
Now in their new space, weekly presentations will showcase Brisbane’s best comedy talent, with the opening program including shows like ‘BrisAsia Stands Up’ (Brisbane’s best Asian comedians!) and the hugely popular ‘Cool Story
Bro’ (Brisbane Comedy Festival, Wynnum Fringe Festival).
With a clear COVID safety plan in place, Big Fork Theatre is ready to bring comedy back to the community. It’s no doubt the last few years have been tough on artists due to the pandemic. However, this new venture is guaranteed to prove in some cases that laughter is the best medicine.
Big Fork Theatre’s new space is located on Level 2, 252 St Paul’s Terrace, in Fortitude Valley.
