Musical Comedy ‘The Wedding Singer’ to tour Australia
Melbourne, Gold Coast and Sydney will be treated to a special wedding event as ‘The Wedding Singer’ prepares to tour in 2021.
Presented by David Venn Enterprises (‘Bring It On The Musical’), this Broadway hit will bring the 80s to Australian audiences from April next year.
Based on the popular Hollywood movie of the same name, which starred Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, ‘The Wedding Singer’ is a hilarious fun-filled musical that celebrates love and the 1980s. Think big hair, neon colours and popped collars – this party is ready to entertain!
Following sold-out performances on Broadway and across the UK, ‘The Wedding Singer’ features favourite characters alike the film, and a sparkling soundtrack full of pop beats and ballads.
The story follows New Jersey’s number one wedding singer, Robbie Hart is the life of the party. That is until his own fiancé leaves him stranded at the alter. Bitter, broken and spiteful, Hart sets out to make every wedding just as disastrous as his own, until a sweet, warm-hearted waitress named Julia intervenes. The only catch is that Julia’s about to be married! As such, Hart sets out to win the heart of girl of his dreams.
‘The Wedding Singer’ will tour in 2021 to Melbourne’s Athenaeum Theatre in April, Gold Coast’s Home of the Arts in June and Sydney’s State Theatre in July, with more cities yet to be announced. Described as “high octane” and an “instant crowd pleaser”, tickets will be on sale from 1 December 2020.
The musical features music by Matthew Sklar (‘Elf the Musical’), lyrics by Chad Beguelin (‘Aladdin’) and a book by Beguelin and Tim Herlihy. As a co-collaborator with Sandler, Herlihy is also known for his work on ‘Happy Gilmore’ and ‘Billy Maddison’.
David Venn Enterprises will hold an open call for auditions, which will be announced in the coming months. ‘The Wedding Singer’ will feature an Australian cast and creative team, yet to be announced.
All performances will adhere to strict COVID safe measures, as per Government regulations.
