Hit me with a Britney Spears Musical
Oh baby, baby – word on the street is that Britney Spears’ pop anthems are being turned into a feminist musical.
Titled ‘Once Upon a One More Time’, the new production will feature 23-songs from her repertoire and star classic fairy-tale princesses – including Snow White, Cinderella, Rapunzel and Sleeping Beauty.
The plot will centre on the women working through a collection of Grimm’s fairy tales at their fortnightly book club. After hearing their wish for new reading material, a rogue fairy godmother grants them Betty Friedan’s feminist classic, ‘The Feminine Mystique’, which sparks a royal revelation.
If you’re like me, then you may have envisioned a sassy Snow White singing ‘Toxic’ to an Evil Queen with an apple – and I’m totally living for this idea.
The musical will premiere at the James M. Nederlander Theatre in Chicago later this year, before heading to New York for a Broadway season in 2020. Directed by Tony Award Nominee, Kristin Hanggi (‘Rock of Ages’) and choreographed by Keone and Mari Madrid, an official opening night has been pencilled in for 13 November 2019.
Unlike fellow icons, like Cher and Carole King, this won’t be a musical about the singer’s life. So, you may need to leave the fluffy hair ties and school uniform at home.
Although it’s unclear whether Spears will be involved in the musical, ‘Once Upon a One More Time’ has her stamp of approval regardless. In a recent statement, Spears gushed her support for the show.
“I’m so excited to have a musical with my songs – especially one that takes place in such a magical world filled with characters that I grew up on, who I love and adore,” Spears said. “This is a dream come true for me!”
The pop star has recently taken an ‘indefinite work hiatus’ after her father’s health scare. She’s set to return to the Las Vegas stage, however, with her new residency show ‘Domination’.
More to come with this story, but you should be so lucky if you get to see it.
